Functionary roles
Each Toastmasters meeting includes a variety of speaking and support roles that keep things running smoothly and help you build valuable communication and presentation skills. As you grow more comfortable with the meeting format, you’ll be encouraged to try each role—one at a time—as part of your learning journey.
Sergent at Arms: Arrives early. Sets up the room and welcomes guests.
President: Opens the meeting and sets the tone.
Toastmaster: A meeting’s director and host.
Timekeeper: Responsible for monitoring the time of meeting segments and speakers.
Grammarian: Helps club members improve their grammar and vocabulary.
Meeting Speaker: Every speaker is a role model and club members learn from one another’s speeches.
Topicsmaster: Plans and runs the Table Topics for the meeting.
Table Topics Speaker: Practics their impromptu speaking skills.
Ah-Counter: Keeps track of ahh, erm and other filler words
Evaluator: Provides verbal and written feedback to meeting speakers.
General Evaluator: Evaluates everything and everyone, not already evaluated, that takes place during the club meeting.
